These rats are trained from 4 weeks old in order for them to overcome their fear of humans. They are then trained very rigorously to identify the clicking noise of mines and the scent of TNT. These rats unlike humans work incredibly fast and efficient, clearing 2000 square foot fields in hours instead of a whole day for humans. Their advantage is that they are light enough to walk over them and not set them off in the process. These rats do not only contribute to the clearing of mine fields, but also in advancing the research of tuberculosis in Tanzanian hospitals, where the tests were just 60% accurate.
