Fruits of Partnership

We had previously heard news of Nokia splitting ways with Symbian and moving onto Microsoft, but we now see the fruits of their partnership. At first we may have expected to see a MEEGO device before a Windows Phone 7, but it seems that Nokia is much more invested within Microsoft technology than MEEGO. AT a recent press conference it was announced that they would be releasing the first Nokia Windows phones.

We all knew that Symbian’s Touch UI was a bit weak, but Nokia was curious about what their customers were thinking about there recent decision to switch over to Windows new OS. For the most part customers placed the most neutral answer which was other, but the other points which gained a lot of attention was the Xbox related gaming options and the refresh on the UI.

Since Nokia has split with Symbian we have been wondering which direction they would be heading towards since, they had previously expressed their disinterest in Android. I personally thought that they were going to be heading more towards the direction of furthering MeeGo for the purposes of all of their phones. In the end Nokia did settle to try and take Microsoft as the next option for the OS on their mobile phones.

Originally Nokia had intended to release a phone charger which is powered by biking. Unfortunately they were not able to keep their intended time of release or price, but it is still coming out soon and it is very convenient for it’s target consumers. Although Nokia may be a dying brand for mobile phones in America, it is an entirely different case in Europe where this is being released.

We have heard so much about the MeeGo OS which Nokia has been working on until now. They will be releasing there first MeeGo device in Europe during mid-2011, and will probably be unveiled during Mobile World Congress in February. This is presumably going to be an OS which can compete with Android and iOS for the top spot in the Cellular OS market, however with OS’ such as the ones shown on the Windows Phone 7 I have a hard time believing these claims.

First they get to be the site of the 2018 World Cup and now we have spotted some MeeGo devices in Moscow. There is not too much known aside from the fact that is an Intel Atom powered device with a hi/lo vibrant screen and what seems to be a 5mp camera.

There have been a few reported problems with the Nokia N8 since it’s release. Namely the lack of the ability to turn on. There have been reports on Twitter and such, but those could have been isolated incidents, however after hearing from Niklas Savander, from Nokia, it has been confirmed that a “small number” of the N8′s have this issue.

For whatever reason they have decided Nokia has put out in a recent financial statement that they will not be speaking of and possibly not releasing any thing on Symbian ^3 or Symbian ^4. There are so many possible reasons for this action by Nokia, but one that we can safely assume is that it is due to their current financial issues within the company.

Everyone is facing their own issues with a falling economy but Nokia seems to be hurting the most in the mobile phone industry. To begin with the are dead last in the smartphone race, their top executives are leaving them, and they have yet to land any major deal with their cell phones. It also doesn’t help that their second largest selling location, India, has dropped by 20%. This is a huge blow for the Finnish company which was once the most common phone in that area.
